CAREER STORIES
David Whale
David Whale
David Whale was awarded a gold trophy on the live stage at The NEC Classic Motor Show in recognition of his work in supporting and promoting the development of skills training and apprenticeship programmes.
David Whale is well known for his work as a volunteer leading the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs for over 10 years. As Chairman of the Federation, David has led the organisation in its work to protect the rights of all of us to use our historic vehicles, specifically by representation to Government and Government Agencies. Under his stewardship the Federation has built a strong reputation for its research work and as we have heard, has been very successful in raising funds, through Drive It Day, for Childline’s ‘One Unforgettable Day'.
What many will not know is that David has also been very much involved in the development and support of apprentice programmes to address the shortage of skills in the historic vehicle sector. Indeed, the Federation was one of the first organisations, ten years ago, to identify that there would be a skills shortage.
More recently David has been involved in the establishment of the Federation Skills Trust, a charity spun out of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs with the objectives of training and teaching engineering skills for the repair, maintenance, preservation and renovation of all types of historic transport, not just motor vehicles.
SUPPORTED BY
Federation Skills Trust
The object of The Federation Skills Trust is the advancement of education by promoting, whether directly through financial or other support, the training and teaching of engineering skills and processes and by encouraging and supporting the development and transference of skills appertaining to the repair, maintenance, preservation and renovation of all types of heritage transport, historic vehicle and machinery.
The Trust was established as a product of the cooperation between the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs and The Galashan Trust around heritage engineering apprenticeships. We have contributed financially and in practical ways with the establishment of apprenticeship training providers including the Heritage Skills Academy.

SUPPORTED BY
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs exists to uphold the freedom to use historic vehicles on the road. It does this by representing the interests of owners of such vehicles to politicians, government officials, and legislators both in the UK and (through the Federation Internationale des Vehicules Anciens) in Europe.
The F.B.H.V.C. with the aid of The Galashan Trust and many others was instrumental in the creation of both the Levels 2 & 3 apprenticeship frameworks and of the Level 3 Heritage Engineering Apprenticeship Standard which replaced them in 2019.
